I’ve never attended a Group Fitness Class before and don't know which one to try
Group Fitness classes are divided into the following categories:
1) Cardio – which works your heart and burns lots of calories which is great for weight loss;
2) Strength and Tone – which helps you to strengthen and tone the body’s muscles;
3) Mind/Body – which are classes like Yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Stretching, etc., which because of minimal or no jumping or bouncing, are more gentle on the joints and calming for the mind;
4) Cycling – cardio workouts which bring the outdoor cycling experience inside, and;
5) Specialty Classes – like Fit2SpeedDate, Fit2Ski, and Fit4Soccer which pop up from time to time and add fun, excitement and something new to our program offerings. If you’re still not sure what might suit your purposes, then check out the class descriptions and try something new and exciting.
When attending a new group fitness class, should I tell the instructor that I’m new to class?
Absolutely! By introducing yourself to the instructor, you allow them to better accommodate you in the class by showing you what you need and how to set up, answering your questions and alleviating any fears. But remember, they can only do this if you show up early. Once the class has started, they have to attend to the entire class.
How early should I show up for a group fitness class?
Try to be at class at least 5-10 minutes in advance so that the instructor can speak with you and other new members before the action begins. However, keep in mind that if the instructor is doing back-to-back classes, they are only accessible as one class ends and before the next one begins.
Are there group fitness classes geared specifically for beginners?
Yes, our SmartStart classes are intended to be more appropriate for the new Group Fitness participant. Ask your Fitness Consultant during your assessment which classes would be best suited to your needs. You can also find SmartStart classes listed on the Group Fitness schedule for each club location
Where should I stand in a group fitness class?
It’s a personal choice as to your preferred positioning, but here are some things to consider when attending cardio-style classes that have lots of movement. Standing at the back of the room may make it hard for you to see what the instructor is doing. Standing right at the front may be difficult if you’re not familiar with the class movements and others are moving all around you. Probably the best place to position yourself is somewhere mid-way between the front and back of class, slightly off to the side so that you can see the instructor, but aren’t right in the thick of the action. In a cycling class, any position is good, as participants are all stationary on their bikes throughout the class. Similarly with Mind/Body classes (Yoga, Pilates, Stretch, etc.), you can position yourself anywhere in the room and know that your mat is your space within which to work.
Do I need to bring anything to a group fitness class?
Proper footwear is a must, as well as a towel and water should be brought with you to class. Equipment is provided for classes such as Ball, Step, Sculpt/Weight-training, etc. Yoga mats are available for Yoga/Pilates classes, however, many members prefer to invest in their own personal mat and bring it with them to class. Certain classes require participants to provide their own equipment such as wraps and gloves for martial arts classes such as boxing. Check with the club before attending class, or check the Group Fitness schedule.
Is there anything else I need to know about attending group fitness classes?
Basic etiquette is fundamental to successful and enjoyable Group Fitness classes. Please arrive on time. Entering classes after they have begun is disturbing to others. If you must leave early, advise the instructor ahead of time so they are aware and do your best to minimize disruption to others as you leave. Put your equipment away when you leave. Leave boots, coats, purses and bags locked in lockers rather than bringing them to the studio. Personal effects reduce space for participants to work out safely in class. Follow what the instructor is doing. If you need to modify exercises due to injury or ailments, advise the instructor ahead of time so that they are aware and can assist you as needed. If you wish to do your own workout, you should excuse yourself and do your workout elsewhere in the club. Finally, have fun, enjoy the music and have a great workout!!
